    Todays Earth Rod Efforts

They should be separated by the depth of the rod, so 3.6m deep, 3.6m apart for example with 3no rods coupled together

My question about the lightning rod

Lightning rods also don't attract lightning unless it's an ESE type which is pretty unlikely in the US

What do people charge for the first hour and for callouts

I wouldn't think twice about paying an electrician over £100 an hour to work in my house but they simply don't ask that much! My company charges me out at 115 an hour or 800 a day +vat +travel for earthing installation

Extending earth rods making minimal difference?

Solid copper rods use a threaded dowel as a coupler Even better is the steel rods made by Dehn they have a pin on one end and a hole in the other so the pin compresses and locks the rods together as you drive them in the ground Edit - a link if anyone is interested as it's an unusual product...

A simple lightning rod vs a commercial

The first picture is an ESE and the second a regular air terminal. The ESE is expensive but only needs 2 downconductors and earths so normally quite a cost saving.

    Maybe use copper Earth tape?

I could be wrong but it sounds and looks exactly like marconite which can also be bought premixed with cement.
