UK Earth to Live Voltage - 206v

I've been fault finding an issue in a domestic property, the situation is as follows... RCD spur that is protecting outside sockets, This spur is on the downstairs 32A ring, the sockets directly on the ring pass RCD tripping test. The cables coming into the spur won't trip when tested...

Combining cables to increase current capacity?

Thats a good idea. The purpose of the upgrade is to install an electric boiler which would be on a 63amp breaker. I suppose the meters could be upgraded to 80amp ( and both on peak). One board purely supply the boiler and the other one to cover the rest of the flats electrics? I cannot...

Combining cables to increase current capacity?

I have a problem and I think I have a solution but wanted to throw it out there to check it is acceptable.. First floor flat with two fuseboards - 1 24hr and 1 Night time economy. The boards are being supplied by two armoured cables coming from separate isolators/meters (60A) from the ground...

    14Kw Electric Boiler

I've just seen some of the posts to the thread. The 14Kw size came from her relatives who do bathroom fitting (but not boilers). Having looked into it a bit myself, it does seem very over spec'ed for a small flat. The owner of the flat on the ground floor let me in to look at the meters etc...

    14Kw Electric Boiler

Thanks for the detailed advice. I've just gone to the flat below where all of the meters are. The meters have a 60Amp fused isolator box which has a thick armoured cable that goes up and away into the flat, but its hard to identify what size this is?? It doesn't give much head room at all for...

    14Kw Electric Boiler

Yes sorry that is with the boiler. However, it has occurred to me that the boiler they are thinking of getting is perhaps more powerful than they need? It is only a 1 bed second floor flat. So 5 rads max plus hot water for kitchen and bathroom. I'm thinking now that their best solution would be...

    14Kw Electric Boiler

Yes it is a bit of a mess and I'm not sure why it wasn't picked up during the survey? (it is a friend of mine). They should have had an EICR which would have highlighted it straight away.

    14Kw Electric Boiler

    I am trying to find the spreadsheet that I used to calculated them. It was something like; Electric Boiler 63a x 100% = 63A 7Kw Cooker after diversity applied - 21A x 40% = 8.4A Kitchen ring 32A x 40% = 12.8A Ring main 32a x 40% = 12.8A LED lights (60w)...

    14Kw Electric Boiler

I would like some advice please. A friend of mine has moved into a small flat. There is no Gas supply to the property and so is looking into having a 14Kw Boiler installed. This would require a 63A breaker on the board. My calculations for Maximum Demand based on the other circuits in the...

New consumer unit but lighting has no earth

Thanks for the reply Westward10. In that case is a rewire essential? I have seen class II light fittings advertised as not requiring earth and considered wireless switches. More expense than the client was expecting but a rewire of the 1st floor lighting would be even more drastic I suspect.... :(

New consumer unit but lighting has no earth

I've been asked to fit a new consumer unit in an old property. One issue that I have found straight away is that the lighting would seem to have no cpc (old 2 wire cables). Ideally I would advise to have the lighting circuit rewired but the 1st floor of the property has a flat roof with no...

How to certify a lighting spur off a socket?

I've just finished a small job replacing a bathroom light and adding an extractor fan. Since it is a very old installation there was no earth to the lighting circuit. Part of the job was to remove a fan heater that had been supplied by a socket radial. To overcome the lack of earth situation...

I snapped a piece of to send for testing... Only kidding, took advice and making arrangements for it to be tested by the proper people.

    Does this look like asbestos

Found this lining a cupboard containing a CCU. Property is central London Town house so very old. Just about to start drilling into and thought it looked suspicious? Fire retardant lining perhaps?? Any thoughts...

What do we need RCDs fit anyway...

The RCD has been bypassed because it wasn’t working so non of the socket circuits were protected. I found it by chance because I was there to do an unrelated job

What do we need RCDs fit anyway...

Just to clarify. This is how I found the board, not sure if my sarcasm came over correctly in my post. I hope no one thinks I was suggesting this was actually my remedy. I have put a new RCD in. It is a temp fix as it is not a Volex RCD as I’m struggling to find a source for a Volex brand? Can...
