Why do people get away with meter tails longer than 3 meters

On a new build site how/ why are people getting away with installing meter tails over 3metres in length and behind dot and dabbed walls with no other fused iso's/ or protection on the cables. Personally I use 25mm² swa and a fused isolator. Just want people thoughts??

    3 Types of Meter Tails

Evening! Once upon a time I would use 25mm meter tails which comprised of 7 strands. I now use a 19 strand version. The other day, however, I'm sure I spotted a very fine stranded version on a page on YouTube or in a catalogue/magazine etc. Anyone know what this would have been and is it...

Meter tails no rcd in stud wall

During an EICR meter tails were found entering the cavity and coming down a stud wall to a consumer unit about 5 meters (direct distance) away. they do have an isolator but no rcd or other protection . as cables buried in a wall have to have (RCD) Residual Current Device at 30mA and generally...

Correct process for meter tails upgrade and isolator install

Hi guys, I hope you're all doing ok in this heat!! I have recently carried out an EICR on a domestic property where it failed miserably. The consumer unit is an old MEM metalclad built in the 70's and requires replacement. The meter tails both on the supplier's side and consumer's side are...

New meter tails running in 2 core 25mm swa and 16mm single earth

Hi everyone, i might be having to run new meter tails from meter box to consumer unit which is just under 3m run, i have used 25mm 3 core before and its hard to work with especially through joists. I was thinking about 2 core 25mm swa and a seperate 16mm earth to make life easier but then came...

Mix of 16mm and 25mm Meter Tails

Hi, Just had a new Smart Meter fitted yesterday along with isolator. The chaps installing the SMART meter used 16mm tails from the main DNO fuse cut out (containing 80 amp fuse) to the meter, but then used 25mm tails from the meter to the newly installed isolator (which they also installed). I...

    Meter tails 10m long

A customer has Rewired their house, and has run all the cables to a new a location they want the CU in, DNO has apparently told them, they can't move the incomers and meters without everything being tested and certified, creating the obvious issue that its not possible to test and certify...

UK Single meter suppplying 2 properties?

New to the forum and first-time poster! Currently trying to confirm what the top meter (circled) in the photos supplies? To me, it seems the meter tails enter the connector block and then there are two outputs coming from the block - one to the top isolation switch and one to the lower...

UK Thoughts on Meter Tails Install?

I’m rewiring a massive house and there’s a feed to a c.u in the old black rubber cable that needs replacing. I know that Meter tails follow the same guidelines as other domestic wiring, but i’m trying to avoid putting a rcd on supply end of the tails. The run is about 20meters long and going...

Can you extend meter tails inside a consumer unit ?

...and why would I want to do that ? Well, I'm faced with a real botch job of a consumer unit. Essentially this is a "new" consumer unit only put in a couple of years ago by a friend of the clients family who was apparently an electrician. However the unit they bought (a Niglon) had the main...

    16mm meter tails

Hi, gone to look at a board change job, it’s an old re-wirable fuse box less than 3m away from DNO and ran in 16mm tails, 10mm earth and no bonding to the incoming gas pipe and customer has no idea where the water comes in as the house has no stop cock. I will be putting a dual split rcd 100a...
