If the 17th edition is being amended in January will there be new books coming out with these amendments in. Do these amendments mean that existing holders of the 17th have to go back to college to do them (the amendments that is) in order to keep themselves up to date. How does anyone know if you've done the amendment or not anyway, do you get a certificate or something.

I dont want to do my 17th now, (spend money on books ect that will not have the amendments in), then have to go back to college in Jan and update the books.

Should i wait till January before doing the 17th ?? or should i do it now? Im not installing so im not breaking any laws.

Thanks

do it next year. the fossil fuels that we use to generate electrickery will not run out before the 19th edition.

the new book is coming out.
you need a new 80 quid book to keep yourself up to date...

when they will start calling it 18 edition then you can go to a training centre for exam only option and call
yourself 18 edition qualified.

Will it be the 18th ed from January ? Surely not is it

Update your knowledge as soon as you like but it is unlikely to be enforced until July 2015. Having said that, a regs update is generally only required when the edition changes, an exemption from this rule was when the 16th ed. 1999-2000 Blue regs was updated to June 2001 Blue regs.
So IMO no need to upgrade until the 18th ed. or when your authorizing body requires you to do it.

Thanks, I need to do the 17th cause i dont have it atall (i have the 16th). It seems a waste of money to do it next week if in January I have to pay again to do the amendment. If i have to buy a book I might as well wait for the updated one in January)

For anyone who already has the 17th; -Do you have to pay money and do a verified course for the amendment or is it a find it out for yourself sort of amendment ?

Most colleges like you to pay the money as it means they can not only claim some funding (although I think the government may have stopped that) but also because they need the numbers on the course with the corresponding income so that it will run.
All courses have a budgeted minimum number of candidates otherwise its not viable for the college to run it. Also, your completion and results go down as statistical evidence when ofsted come and visit.
However, you'd be advised to do the full course as there have been a lot of changes since the 16th.

Thanks for all the answers but I still need to know; is it compulsory for electricians who already hold the 17th edition to go back to college to do the amendments or not ?

If yOu can see where im going with this, its why I want to know if to do the 17th now or in January.

From Jan 2105 BS7671 17th edition incorporating the 3rd amendment comes into being. Between Jan 5th and June 30th you will be able to work to either version, but from 1st July the new regs come into force and must be worked to. You must adopt the new version for any work that will not be completed before the 1st July, as it will not be compliant if done to the current version.

Regarding qualifications, we have suspended our 2 remaining courses this year, and will be delivering to the new standard from our first course in February. I am waiting for a reply from C&G regarding any updates. My best guess because the changes are extensive is that anyone who achieved the 17th after the first amendment but more than 12 months ago may need to do a one day update similar to the 17th update for those who held the 16th after a certain date. This will be driven by the NICEIC and other bodies, so its a case of watch this space and see what happens.

The current qual is C&G 2382-12, it will probably change to 2382-15, it is the -10 or -12 that indicates which 17th edition you hold

You are not doing anything illegal by not holding the 17th edition qual, you just need to make sure your work complies with it as a minimum standard.

Cheers...........Howard

Nothing is compulsory in FE and the C&G world but it all depends whether or you have permission to get your mitts up the exams secretary's skirt. It's all about the revenue the college will generate and who you know in the system. Crude but that's the way it is.....
