I’m a bit of novice but trying to fit a new ceiling light in a room where there are two switches. I have taken off the current light fitting and as you’ll see in the picture one of the black wires is going to neutral and the other to live. My guess is the one that is going to live is the switched live was confused as there was no other marking on it?

In the new fitting there is only a neutral and live so I wanted some advice on how I would wire this new fitting? Where do the two red live wires go? And what about the earth as there doesn’t appear to be a connection for this? I have posted a picture below. Many thanks for your help!

From what you sat, you need to convert your switching system to a two system, easy conversion for an Electrician.

use the black that was connected to brownas switched L as L into light L. sleeve with red tape. other black is N. terminate the 2 reds together, but don't connect to light. terminate all earths together, and again do not connect to light.

think it is already 2 way. pete. he's just confused over the 2 reds and the unsleeved black as S/L. must be a JB somewhere to connect the 2 way. 70's?

Hi Telectrix, you got me scratching my head here. Why would there be a JB? Cheers

Pretty standard loop in or 3 plate system. You’re right in assuming one black is the switchwire (should be identified as such with sleeving or tape) and the other black is neutral.
The 2 reds are indeed live.

Please isolate the circuit and test before touching any of this.

Thanks all for the replies - really useful. I’ll probably get someone to come and do it just to be safe but I’m always interested in these things ??
