I have been asked to find the most suitable device to provide earth fault protection of the internal wiring of an individual fluorescent light fitting.(elcb) or can you use an rcd any help would be great thanks.

Who is asking the question here, is this homework???

The answer depends on the angle of approach, a inline fuse in the fitting is the normal method as you are asking about the internal wiring here and not personal protection which would warrant a rcd option but a fuse would see a N/E fault like a RCD, so back to my question above!

Ask your colleague if N/E faults are need to be protected against and also explain to individually protect each fitting with an rcd would be costly, its the phrase 'internal wiring' of the fitting that needs you to ask further questions Ive put to you.

its a college ? in a PO along with what type of wiring system is suitable for a swimming pool plant room and what accessories I would use ie IPX is what I picked. Thanks for getting back to me

Woody, could I suggest that if you ask a question in future you give the full question. As posed “find the most suitable device to provide earth fault protection of the internal wiring of an individual fluorescent light fitting” is a nonsensical question.

Also state that it is homework. For homework questions you’ll find answers are in short supply unless you make an attempt to answer your question first.

The idea of homework is for you to find the answerers unaided, it teaches you both the subject and how to research answers. The best answer was given by Simon “get a copy of BS7671”. Many of questions posed at college will be based on it.

or have a look/borrow a copy from college, if they have enough copies they will let you borrow one
