Hi, Does anybody know of any alternative to governing the speed of a 3 phase motor than a frequency inverter? Thanks in advance, Jamie

I guess if it doesnt involve T+E you fellas are banging your head against the wall, thanks for the comedic replies though, just amazing....

If it,s a "bog standard" asynchronous induction motor (most common 3-phase motor) your meaning, a frequency converter is the only practical method. There is other more specialist 3 phase motors that can be controlled by other means but these are not very commonly used. Frequency converters are by far the most common way of controlling the speed of an AC 3 phase motor.
Noticed you got some really, really funny replies. Lol

Thanks, yes this is what I thought was the case, i am thinking that the frequency inverter can be controlled via a panel mounted potentiometer

You can control them via a potentiometer yes but depending on the make/model you can get a range of operator panels to give them better control and feedback on key parameters. Is the motor existing or to be sourced?

The motor is already in place D.O.L. , the budget is the main issue here, I wouldnt think that there will be any need for feedback or any kind of ramping up/down of speeds, just a means of governing the speed of the bandsaw blade for cutting different materials

Yes it can easily be controlled via a potentiometer and since the motor you want to speed control seems pretty small, and budget is important to you, I would think it would not cost more than a couple of hundred pounds to source a suitable VSD.

Thanks for all the advice, do you have any recommendations for a frequency inverter to use for this application @ 1.1KW

It depends on the reputation/support you want from the manufacturer. We use both ABB and Danfoss inverters depending on the customer.

Yes, I have had some involvement with both ABB and mitsubishi AC Inverters, as this job is on a tight budget I was hoping that somebody may have a cost effective solution with regards to a cheap no frills inverter, thanks again

Hold it right there!

Have you spoken to the manufacturers about this. You're entering a legal nightmare.
