I apologize if this has been covered before, but this 3 way switch has me chasing my tail.

I have recessed lights in the hallway with two 3 way switches, one being recently replaced with a Lutron dimmer switch. The lights only work when the switch closest to the line (“switch 1”) is in the up position and the dimmer (“switch 2) can be toggled to turn the lights on or off. When switch 1 is in the down position, switch 2 has no function. Note: the switches are between the panel and load.

Switch one has the hot from the line coming into common. 14/3 runs from switch 1 to switch 2 with the red and white on the traveler posts. The black from the 14/3 runs from switch 2 common to the load.

Is it possible my new dimmer switch has a broken leg? I’m fairly sure the wiring is correct, but at this point I’m stuck.

Thanks,
AG

Firstly I must say I'm no expert on Lutron!
It looks from the Lutron data sheet that the hot line needs to go to the dimmer 'common', and then the Lutron wired appropriately to the other switch.

From your description it sounds as if you might have the hot line going to the non-Lutron switch, then through the travellers to the Lutron. I don't know if it can work that way round.

Are you sure it's wired as per their instructions, taking heed of the colours of the screw heads (or colours of pigtails if fitted)?

Well you answered that like a Lutron expert because swapping the switches fixed the problem. I’m not even going to try to understand why the switch locations matter and just be satisfied with good enough. Thanks for your help!
