esternal 500w security lamp 30 meter run
what type and size of cable?
clipped externally

Cable Calcs, come on mate... You can do them, we all have to ;)

:thumbsup

The 500 watt lamp is going to draw 2.17 amps so you'll be looking to use 1.5mm providing (and you can get your book out and check this) that your voltage drop allows it;) I know the answer but you've posted a lot of questions this evening and it's only fair to get your brain in gear too rather than rely on everyone else to feed you the answers, how do you know what you're being told is correct???:)

I personally wouldn't like to be running a cable for 30m just clipped externally. Can you give us more information regarding the route?

:thumbsup

well this says 1.0mm i was just checking it like ------------------------

Supply voltage = 230 Volts
Ib - design current = 2.2 Amps
Protective device type = MCB type B
In - protective device rating = 6 Amps
Length of run of cable = 30 metres
Power factor = 1

Cable Type : Flex

Installation Method : Single-core or Multi-core cables Fixed on (clipped direct), or spaced < 0.3 x cable diameter from a wooden or masonary wall
method C

Ambient temp = 35 °C
Number of circuits including this one = 1
Length of cable in thermal insulation = none

Apply Correction factors:
From TABLE 4C1 : Cg = 1 (Grouping)
From Table 4H3A : Ca = 0.91 (Ambient temp)
From TABLE 52.2 : Ci = 1 (Insulation)
Protective device factor : Cc = 1

It = tabulated current carrying capacity
It = In / (Cg x Ci x Ca x Cc)
It = 6 / (1 x 1 x 0.91 x 1 )
It = 6.59 Amps
From TABLE 4F3A Cable selected = 1 mm²

TABLE 4F3B For 1 mm²; mV/A/m = 46
mV/A/m corrected for power factor = mV/A/m x Power Factor = 46 x 1 = 46

Voltdrop = (mV/A/m x Length x Design current) / 1000
Voltdrop = ( 46 x 30 x 2.2 ) / 1000
Voltdrop = 3.04 Volts
(Maximum permissible voltdrop (regulatuon - 525) = 11.5 Volts)

Calculated Cable size = 1 mm², Minimum Earth conductor size = 1 mm² (Table 54.7)

Maximum Cable Length = 113.6 Metres

I assume you are using SWA
For one lamp at that distance there is no problem. However,..... be assured for yourself and do the calculations, plus you may want to future proof the circuit.

and you are going to clip the cable direct ... to what? You might consider laying along side a path or under pathway slabs?

max. permissible VD for lighting is 3% not 5%. i.e. 6.9V.

could always run a sub-main in. :wheelchair:

well spotted

Just to question why your fitting a 500watt halogen flood, some wholesalers have already stopped stocking them replaced by 400watts and with future plans of phasing them out along with filament lamps, a nice bright 150watt metal hallide might be a better option here and more energy efficient and a little better for future proofing.
Ahhh! just read 'security' light so assuming its PIR controlled in that case i havent been successful in finding a fitting that matches a 500w flood for quick instant light on detection well except the over-rated led floods that are good for a doorstep light.
