Hi forum,
I currently work on domestic properties doing rewires and heating wiring , but have recently been asked to quote for a maintenance contract for a rather large secondary school ( well it has 26 DBs) . Part of the contract is pat testing and fire alarms which i will sub out , but there is also the emergency lighting testing.

which leads me to my question(s)

is emergency lighting test just a case of turning it of waiting two hours or whatever the specified time is for the light to stay on and replacing the ones that dont last the time?
Do you need any random / specific tools like lux meters and are they costly / need calibrating yearly ?
Are the certs much difficulty to fill out and should I have any specific qualifications ?

It all ready feels like too much grief , but im gonna invest in a book and have a scan through some old threads what not . I think its normally split into 4 visits for approx 1300 p .a with remedials charged per light separately to give you some idea of what the value is, which seems good but may work out to be poor as i dont know what I'm getting myself in for!

Any advice would be gratefully received !

Regards

Graham

To do emergency lighting periodic testing requires a working knowledge of BS5266. My advise to you would be to buy a copy.

I would go on a EM course over a day or two, then your get a good idea of what's involved on the subject.

I done one years ago with Channel Lighting and Safety Systems, but only because I got paid for the time off work and the course paid for and came away with quite a bit of course paper work.

Thanks for the quick responses ,

im thinking a short course is the way to go. Il have a little look around and see whats available ! Certainly cant do no harm.

Depends on what system the school already has installed, is it a central battery unit or are all luminaries self contained? Is there test facilities? Has some numpty wired them so the key switch takes out the general lighting as well? If so you may need to price for coming in early morning / evenings / weekends so the kids / teachers aren't in there when the lights are off.

A lot to think about but certainly give it some thought, could open up more doors for you.
