When extending cables, either becaue of moving a socket or cu change and cables don't reach, what is your prefered method?
If using crimp connectors, are the ratings OK? It seems a bit hit and miss with them. I've found some sites that say the blue 2.5mm are rated to 18, 19 amps, whilst others say they are rated to 27 or 30amps?

Cheers
Rich

ashley maintance free junction boxes - by far the neatest and best soloution !

Fine for a single cable but far too bulky if moving a CU as the OP mentioned. Wago do an enclosure with DIN rail monted connectors just for this - good but pricey alternatively crimps in large bit of trunking can be quick and neat ( cue the crimping single core debate)

Nothing wrong with wago's, but they just don't look professional when seen in a CU installation. In this case use good quality crimps and correct coloured heatshrink, and a good crimper. One that will deform the solid conductor within the butt crimps. That will give the wiring within the CU high quality permanent connections that look good too!!!

Thanks, but this leeds me back to my questions over the ratings. If using the red, blue, yellow butt crimps where do you get them from as have been told that the blue ones from toolstation are only rated to 17amps (even though they are for 2.5mm cable) no good for ring circuits.

If your ring is on a 30A breaker, surely two 17A crimps on each end are more than enough. :)

Ask for the technical specification on these blue crimps, The wholesaler should have a copy of the technical spec's on all the materials they sell. All electrical materials that are put forward by the contractor on my project come with full information, and to be honest i haven't seen any colour coded insulated crimp connectors of any type , be they butt ring or other, that are rated below the current carrying capacity of the conductor size they are made for.

Is this a warehouse wholesaler guy who's telling this?? Anyway as i said, ask to see the crimp manufacturers specifications for these through crimps...

I have asked QVS and CED, and as yet neither has got back to me. Both said they didn't have that information on their systems and would need to contact their suppliers! So still none the wiser :)

Do you think these big wholesalers buy stuff, especially consumables off the bat without knowing what they are buying, of course not. What there saying to you is , ....we can't be arsed to go find it!! ...lol!!
