Hello, I'm new to the site and was hoping to start off by asking a couple of questions...here goes:

I'm currently working in the prison service and was hoping to start training towards becoming an electrician and have no prior experience in this field....can anyone confirm that the 'Electrical Installation Work Level 2 City and Guilds 2330 is the best place to start? Secondly, is it possible to pass the exam by study alone from a text book at home?

Cheers

Hi Mickyryderlad

The 2330 is probably the best place to start, but it all depends on what type of work your intend doing when you finish. ie Domestic, Commercial or Industrial and also do you want to do Installations or Maintenance?

:D

I was thinking of doing domestic work, not sure if i want to do installation or maintenance at this point....so is it still the best place to start?

If you do the 2330 and want to do domestic work it will be installation, maintenance is to do with control panels etc in factories etc

The 2330 is a very good course, and would be recommended but the EAL Domestec Installers course is probable cheaper, and gives you the basics, enough the enable you to do domestic work.

So if it's just domestics you want to do, then i'd do the EAL Domestic Installers course, if you think you might want to do industrial later on then do the 2330 as it includes 3-phase supplies, motors etc.

Hope that helps!:D

Hope I don't get into trouble for this & upset somebody, but when you listen to the training sales people just remember they are just that, sales people. They effectively get paid for getting bums on seats of the training course, they have their own interest at heart not yours. The electricians road is not paved with gold, the recession is hitting everybody. The advice given by the previous posters above is unbiased something you won't get from the sales guys & gals.
