Discuss Air conditioning unit in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

Visited a customer who has a domestic air conditioning unit with 13amp plug top. To connect to the socket she has to daisy chain into an extension lead as the A/C unit has been fitted at the top of the wall and the flex is to short to reach the socket and of course the lead dangles in the air! Yes I know, I thought that!

Trying to decide the best way to connect it - without moving the A/C unit.. Thought I'd use a fused connection unit - but, and it is a but, can I/should I spur (using a 2.5mm t&e) direct from double socket in the bedroom and into an FCU and then connect the A/C flex to it.

Or should I connect directly into the ring using JB (next to D/Socket) and then run a cable up the wall to an FCU, that will be next to and adjacent to the A/C and thus then connect the flex.

Concerns being can I cut the flex that has a moulded plug top and not breach any requirements?. The reason I ask is technically the first method I'm not certain its an ok way to do it and regs do not illustrate this method.

I am waiting for the manual to check load etc.. but at moment I'm assuming that the loading and diversity will all be ok.

Your thoughts thanks

Phil

Is this an all in one wall banger , or a split AC unit, the compressor being outside in a separate unit and the Fan Coil Unit being the one in the house ??

In either case, you can always take a spur off the upstairs ring circuit and mount your socket outlet/FCU at high level next to the AC unit. By the way, you should be able to get at the AC cable connection point from the front of the unit, but may have to take the front cover off to gain access to it...

As Engineer54 says is best. You neeed to be careful taking a FCU off an existing socket. It is OK if it is part of the ring but not if it is already a spur (spur off a spur)
Or you could extend/replace the flex from the AC unit and run it in MT2 down the wall and plug into existing socket presuming loading is correct and manufacturers instructions are followed.(Might be OK but would look rough)
