and the number seems to be , maybe : b54392

Hi - as a Sydney boy, its likely the company is AWA, Amalgamated Wireless Australasia. This company was a very well regarded manufacturer of electrical equipment and goods. It had its that head office and a plant off Parramatta Rd in Homebush. Here’s a link to a bit of their history -

As to the item in your pic, I’ll hazard a guess that it’s a high voltage device (lovely set of insulators there) and it was oil filled so possibly a capacitor (?).
 
Yes, does look like an oilfilled transformer, although the application is hard to tell without more data. It could be a potential transformer for an instrument, as it has a pair of terminals with knurled screws rather than studs and nuts, although I think I can see other terminals in the far corner.
