I have an attic fan on a thermostat. I can hear it turn on; but, the motor hums but the blades don't turn. There is nothing obstructing the blades and they turn by hand. Don't know where to start.

Best guess Is a faulty capacitor

If you are an electrical novice, it may well be easier to replace the whole fan.
But if you are competent then a capacitor will probably cost under ten us dollers
