Hi, I'm new here, with a question regarding installing a new instant start ballast. I live in the US. and I have fluorescent lights in my kitchen (4 tubes). The kitchen light stopped working, so I replaced the four burned-out tubes, but the light still didn't work. Someone recommended I replace the ballast, so I bought a new one. I didn't bring the old one with me, but answered the questions on how many bulbs, what type of bulbs, etc.

When I got it home, the location of the wires for the two ballasts were slightly different.
The old one, coming out of one side: one black, one white, two yellow
The old one, coming out of the other side: two red, two blue
Four wires on one side, four on the other

The new one, coming out of one side: one black, one white
The new one, coming out of the other side: two red and a yellow (coming out grouped together), two blue and a yellow
Two wires on one side, six on the other

Does that mean I bought the wrong ballast to replace the old one? Or if I match the connections (i.e., remove old yellow ballast wires, connect new yellow ballast wires to the same locations), that will work?

This is as far as I go with attempting a fix; my electrician friend is out of town for a few days, and I have company coming tomorrow night. But if replacing the ballast doesn't work, I will bring in a professional.

Thanks,
Cindy
