Discuss Bathroom Zone 1 to Zone 3 type fitting conversion and GU10 LED questions in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

I am not an electrician, but before I go and call out fellows in the trade who charge by the hour just to give an opinion, I thought I'd ask you gentlefolk some questions:

I have two bathrooms, one with a sliding-door shower alone, another with a bathtub with an over-bath shower.

The first, the solely shower bathroom, has two zone 1 IP65 recessed halogen light fixtures, even though one is actually within a zone 1 distance, and the second light is in what is most definitely zone 3, thus it could have a regular, unprotected fixture, if I understand the rules right.

The second, with the bath, has one zone 1 halogen light fixture, a recessed IP65 one, and another zone 3 one, that is not recessed.

Now, first of all, the second bathroom, the one with the bath, has acceptable 40W GU10's in both fixtures, while the shower-only bathroom has dismally poor light producing 35W GU10's.

How easy or not is to replace the further away, deeply recessed fixture in the shower-only bathroom for a suitable zone 3 one that would allow more light to flood the dismally lit bathroom? On the increased wattage GU10 front, I saw in the housing that it can use up to a 50W GU10, but I'd rather see what good I can do with a quality German GU10 compatible LED unit, perhaps a 5W Sebson flooder as opposed to a spot one that gets very favorable reviews and is said to be built to very high standards.

So I would like to definitely replace the bulb/unit but also, if possible, have a less recessed, not so highly protected fixture put in which won't contain so much of the light as this horrendous and deeply-set in current one does. Is there any valid reason to have a zone 1 fixture in a location that is over 1.5 meters away from the shower and 2.3 meters up, and away from any taps have an IP65 rated protected fixture? Especially this shoddy thing that doesn't let half the light through!

What advice do you gents (and any ladies who might be reading this) have on this matter?

I can take and upload pictures that I could attach links to if that would help at all.

Many thanks in advance,

A.

hmm. first, there is no zone 3 any more. the zones are ( forgetting zone 0, as it's irrelevant in your case)

zone 1 - directly above bath/shower to a height of 2.25m .

zone 2 - outside zone 1, but within 0.6m of bath/shower horizontally, again to a height of 2.25m.

any sealed unit LED fitting is suitable for use in zone 1. their IP rating should be IP44X or greater. Outside of zone 2, then IP20X is acceptable as long as it is "suitable for the environment".

nope. another chancer by the looks of it. too tight to call in a sparks. trying to pick brains for free.

Think that is most of them if you don't help them your an ignorant got if you do no thanks nothing
