Hi I am a UK citizen living in the UK, I am currently looking into taking on a course in the UK to become a fully qualified electrician with prospects to move to Australia, I was just enquiring on what routes to take if I want to take this skill to Australia, also if it was at all possible to do training(appentiship) so that I could go straight to Australia either acquiring the right qualifications whilst in Australia or before I go? At present these are just ideas floating around and any feedback would be appreciated.
cheers dave

If your thinking of becomming a Domestic Installer (quick course), not a fully qualified via apprenticeship spark, I would advise against it. Heard they're only just cottonning on to the idea of houses in Aus.

I think australia is the way forward . For me personally anyway, I told myself when I completed my apprenticeship (June just gone) I'd take a year out and travel to australia, Thailand, etc, do the usual fruit picking and try to get my foot in a door somewhere somehow, I plan to go mid next year, for me personally I cannot see a future in the uk as an electrician, having trained for 4 years and having to work for **** money because Britain lets people in that will work for £7-10 per hour, it's killing the trade industry and I guess every other industry, at least australia are fussy, if you don't bring something that will benefit them then you don't get in, rant over :)

i am not sure if it is possible just to transfer straight from here to there as a spark i had a good mate that moved there and he was a spark but could not get work he works for Pilkington glass there now and loves it i am not sure why he could not get work as a spark maybe there was just no openings so good luck to you but seriously dont bother with the crash courses from what we read here they are worse than useless.

You need to do a TRA test, different parts have different tests, some areas only let you work in their area (state) but some some tests will let you work in any state. I know if u pass in Melbourne you can work anywhere in oz,
my mate has been out there 2 years (now married to an oz) and it is very closed shop, they do not want to give their work to foreigners, if you do get in, you will be the lowest past doing the worst jobs. You have to remember jobs are more scarce over there as well. ( not quite as bad as here)
he is earning more money picking seasonal fruit and seeds.
if you try it good luck
one last thing, he tried doing his paperwork through a company here in the uk, cost him a few grand and wasn't worth the paper it was written on when seeing employers over there.
He is fully qualified, but this paperwork was a bit like someone over here with a Electrical Trainee certificate

The Aussies have the right idea and high standards and I understand they have you jumping through hoops with trade tests and provisional working .

So how come we screwed up then with our open door dodgy east european grade cards and 5 week wonders

I was over in Queensland ( a long time ago ,,, )
My qualifications ( NOT electricians quals ) meant almost nothing there. I needed to take trade tests and jump through lots of hoops before I was awarded my Tradesman Radio "ticket". After that though it was plain sailing. I would be very carefull in selecting someone in the UK to apply for australian quals on the strength of your UK ones!
