i prefer the bahco ones with the dog that stops them from self adjusting once you've set the opening aperture.
 
Depends on the gland size IMO, Bahco wide jaw adjustables will do you upto 32mm. Anything bigger either big pump pliers, footprints or stilsons.
 
bloody rough as, the lot of you! for glands upto 25 I use bacho widejaw adjustable spanners. for anything above that I use what are known as eagle beaks: on the sites ive worked on, you would be no longer required if you marked glands because of using waterpump pliers.
