Hi
I’m trying to run a gas combi boiler from a 2500kva petrol generator, but the boiler shuts down when connected to the generator displaying a supply problem.
In the boiler house I have 2 separate sockets one coupled to the domestic supply the other one a direct feed from the generator, the idea being that if there was a domestic power failure, I would just unplug the boiler from the domestic supply and plug it into the socket fed from the generator.
I’m able to run everything else I have tried from the generator i.e. power tools, lights etc just not the boiler.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

What test equipment do you have?

Most likely the generator does not have a voltage regulator built in, or if it does, it's not working properly.
Or, the engine is running at an incorrect speed giving you an incorrect supply frequency.

Compare the brightness of a filament lamp on normal mains and the generator if you have no test equipment.

Also, try loading up the generator in the range of 500-1000VA (maybe a fan heater on low heat setting) and see what the boiler does when the additional loading is present.

Simon.

Are you using a generator that gives a true sine wave output or is it an inverter type generator, As previously stated frequency could be an issue I have heard of a number of new generators recently with outputs in excess of 65Hz with no load and the frequency only getting down close to the 50Hz with about 70% of full load output connected
