I have a customer who has recently bought a new Bosch fridge freezer. On plugging it in the RCD trips as it goes through it's start up cycle. I have tested the RCD and all is fine. Bosch replaced the appliance and same thing happens with the new one. A Bosch engineer has now visited and told the customer that a type A RCD is required with these appliances to prevent this problem, however they refuse to guarantee that this will cure the problem.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so did fitting this type of RCD cure the problem?

Thanks

They make me laugh. IR test the fridge at 250volts, if it fails jot the results down, stick them to the door and tell them to come collect their fridge and drop one off that is fit for purpose.

Measure the residual current on the rcd with the fridge freezer isolated then try meausuring the residual current again with only the fridge freezer on. You could be surprised with the amount of earth leakage when the compressor kicks in. Add these figures together and you will probably find it is higher than the current it takes to operate the device. Do a ramp test then this will verify where the rcd actually trips. Remember a "healthy" 30mA Rcd can ramp at 15.1mA and will show as a pass on all tests. What do the MI's say about the type of rcd to be used for the appliance supply?

agreed, try it on its own with nothing else connected, it may well be within limits 3.5mA from memory but may be enough to trip the RCD over the edge. If you can clamp the meter tails as it kicks in this is the easiest way of checking.

There could be a high standing earth leakage current, and the compressor starting is just the straw on the proverbial. Test for the standing current by switching off all circuits, then switching on one at a time while measuring the earth leakage current, using a clamp meter that measures down to 1mA, around the main earth cable.

Regards

And this will tell you precisely what?Clamping the main earth will not give you the leakage current, you need to clamp both tails together, earth leakage current won't always come back to the main earth, what about bondng to services, plus metal back boxes screwed to brick walls.

Or even give the appliance a full PAT test , preferably one with a load test facility. If of course you have, or have access to a PAT tester that is....
