lady I've just been out to quote for wants, among other things, a new slave socket. outside the house is a junction box joining the supply cable to the master on the other side of the wall. going through the wall is a 3 pair cable. can I use the spare cores to come back out to the junction box and take my slave extension from there?

cheers, adie

No that cable is property of BT and must not be tampered with in any way. Run a new cable, if it's run outside use outdoor cable. Join to indoor cable if you need to run it through the inside of the house.

If the master socket is mounted on a knock out box BT would not have installed it, they only install surface mounted boxes. It is probably a historic external JB that someone else has extended? I wouldn't lose sleep over it personally! Just remove the cable and open up the existing hole, then come out again using external telephone cable(drop wire)

I'm not good enough to hit a 20mm hole in the back of a knock out box from the other side of a external wall.

I've started using a 22mm diamond core bit to avoid blowing the render or the face of the bricks off. (Won't go through a 20mm knockout though, and I haven't found a 20mm core yet.)

I hate it when you see that, half the brick face on the floor outside following an internal SDS assault, plumbers seems to be the worst culprits. Personally I put a depth stop on a pilot bit and switch to hammer off with about 15mm to go, takes a bit longer but makes a decent job as you can finish off from both sides with the bigger bit.

There's a limit on how teeny weeny you can go with a 400mm SDS bit. Even a 10mm is good enough to blow the face off the brick in my experience.
Absolutely. Even a 6mm pilot drill will blow the face off a brick if you just go at it like a madman. You just get a feel for it, coupled for a determination not to walk outside and see the dreaded result of a hasty SDS assisted gung-hoe attempt.

Can't be worse than the time I chiselled a 2"x2" hole to get a load of cables under the floor of a house from the utility room, it was winter and dark outside. Once I had cleared the hole, I couldn't understand how there were plants growing under the floor, and that they were so green without sunlight! Then it hit me, I had made the hole too far over. I went outside with a torch and in making the hole I had also knocked a large section of render off of the wall, the patch was about 1' wide by 1.5' high. oops.:oops::oops::oops::oops:
