HI, I am after some help/info regarding charging a battery - Just a standard 12v 22ah Golf buggy battery. Its a vrla gel type I believe.

I would like to know if I can use a very basic car battery charger to charge this battery from time to time. I keep reading I should use a 3 stage automatic charger such as a optimate. Is it absolutely necessary?

Mobility Battery 12v-22Ah (GEL), Quality Replacement 12v Battery

Sorry if this isnt the right place but I was after some independant advice!!!

Thanks everyone.

Dan

If the link is to your supplier of the batteries then they should be able to give you the charging requirements of their batteries. If they can't then I'd start dealing with a better supplier.

Nearly all batteries will give much longer life if their charging is monitored and controlled by an intelligent battery charger. The charger should be able to regulate the charging voltage and current according to the battery temperature and internal resistance / charge level.

car battery chargers provide an extremely rough output. not suitable for other types of battery. chance is it would totally knacker the battery.
