I recently purchased a steam sterilizer with a PID controller and I'm trying to figure out how to power it safely. The sterilizer requires 240v but the PID (if I understand it correctly) uses the return 120v on the neutral wire. My problem is that I have an old house and the neutral and ground connect to the same bar.
My initial thought was to buy a breaker, 10/3 w/ground Romex, and an L14-30r outlet. But then I thought I could save a bunch of money if I just repurposed an extension cord I made for my kiln. The cord connects to my dryer outlet (10-30r) but only contains 3 shielded wires -- no ground. I would replace the kiln end (6-30r) with an L14-30r.
Since the neutral and ground connect at the breaker anyway, could I just install a jumper on the L14-30r between the neutral and ground terminals? Would this cause any problems for my device?
