Hi. I've been trying to change an overhead light and run into some confusion regards the wiring and I wondered if someone could advise please.

I've currently got over my confusion by doing a like for like swap of the pendant, wiring the new light into the old ceiling rose terminals. I would however prefer to replace the rose if possible.

The image of the rose with the pendant disconnected is attached below, along with a diagram of the new pendant. I suppose my biggest question is what to do with the red wire in the 'loop' terminal.

unless some dipstick has looped a L from adjacent switch in a 2 gang config.

An odd arrangement, the switch line is a single core insulated and sheathed is it not.
Presumably it is two wire two way switching with the single core coming back from the switch.

Can't make out if it is a single core or not, makes sense because a wire seems to be missing. What is the red in the loop in doing.

Looks to me like the switch wire is the old singles in grey sheath.
Exactly what was said, safely block off the red from the loop as is not needed. Connect new light in with the black (neutral) and grey covered red (switched live) and Earth

You can also post your location here and have the job done properly by a competent electrician, its not a big job wont cost a lot.

Old Singles? Don't 6181Y exist no more.

Put a red wire is a connector on its own, the Brown to you fitting Live or Switch depending how its marked N to N and Earth to Earth if it requires one, job done, no need for an Electrician.

Ive assigned you as DIY as your level of question would put you in this section, this allows members to better respond to your level, please start a PM (conversation) with me if your not DIY and in training for example.

Is this not a borrowed neutral ie L/N from one circuit and single switch wire from switch (live link in switch on other circuit) this used to be common practice years ago on stairs/landing.now presents problems with c/u changes.safe isolation
