I am currently in full time employment for an electrical contractor. Someone mentioned to me today that you can claim back over the years for washing your uniform and the vat back on any hand tools you have brought for your work? is this correct? anybody done this and how?

Yes. Work out what you think you are due - so £3 a wash, tools etc ( lots of online guides), then ring the tax office and say that you'd like to submit a return this year. Put your figures in the relevant boxes (online), and wait for arrival of beer money.

as above, but you can't claim vat back unless you are vat registered. for tools, you can claim the whole cost back against your tax.

£60 for laundry sounds a little light to me. That's only £5 a month, £1 a week (ish). A boil wash and a tumble dry five days a week costs much more than that!! ;)

Its probably a percentage, based on your wash & tumble dryer cycle has more then just your work gear in it

£60 is a flat expense rate that you can claim with no questions asked by the tax man so to speak!

If you've got receipts for the actual washes (of just work clothes!) you can use them instead of claiming the £60.

The £60 figure is just a benchmark figure that HMRC allows you to use when calculating the cost for using your own washing machine etc.
However, if like me, you get your work clothes washed and dried at a Launderette, then you can claim whatever the actual cost is. In my case anything between £6.50 to £11.50.
