I've been eyeing up either getting the Fluke T5-1000 clamp meter or the Fluke 179 DMM but can't decide what type of tester to get.

Which type of tester do you guys use?

I generally find that measuring current is not too frequent, but it does depend on the area in which you work.
The open jaw ones tend to be less accurate than the closed jaw ones, but if you only need an indication then open jaw is fine.
I find that using a multimeter is more common, but generally just for checking and indicative testing so I tend to aim for a cheap and cheerful one that is not too bad.
The fluke one covers most measurements you are likely to need to measure (unless you have a need for lux or dB for which you probably want a calibrated meter)

I've never understood why anyone would use an open jaw current meter when the closed jaw ones are less prone to error.

small multimeter with volts and continuity for everyday use, senstive dilog earth leakage clamp meter when I need to measure current.
