Hi

Did a call out yesterday afternoon. Isolated a section of the downstairs ring circuit in the new extension that had a L-E fault. Bit mysterious however the homeowner then began mentioning rats. Went next door and the neighbour showed us where he had blocked up some rat burrows right beside/underneath the extension. He said he could poke a stick right underneath and feel the buildings insulation?! So anyway the construction looked a bit suspect and it wasn't clear how the rats could of reached the cables from the outside but it seems obvious they did, there could be no other explanation for the faulty cable.

So it could of been straightforward to replace the cable. However the whole electrical installation for the extension was terrible. Not just sloppy but totally amatuer and DIY. Pics below. There was no way I could return the circuit to 32amps which included the kitchen. The thing is the whole thing had been signed off by a NAPIT electrician and accepted by the building control officer. I suggested to the homeowner that they contact NAPIT and for compensation and or correction. Does anyone know how this process works? I would expect a full inspection to take place first before anyone can quote for remedial works. Should they be doing this?

Currently they have a 20amp circuit with some sockets disconnected as there are many 1.5mm radials from the ring from hidden junction boxes. They need to get it fixed quickly. How long do you think this process could take? Any advice?

Thanks

Spynage

Is this a relatively new extension, did the builder arrange the Electrician or the customer?

If the Builder arranged the Electrician, the first recourse for the customer is the Builder, as they need to prove they have tried to resolve the issue with the Contractor.
If the customer arranged the Electrician then they need to contact them first, see the complaint form linked below.

If it was the Builder, they would then need to get the Electrician to agree sort it out whilst the Builder would need to sort out the rodent proofing.

Building Control would have no interest or reponsibility re the electrics, they are only interested in a Cert from an acceptable Body.

Building control will do absolutely sweet FA in this situation as far as they are concerned it is a signed off finished intall

The wiring in the pictures is atrocious and needs ripping out and re-wiring Asap,

As above if the builder or his mate did the wiring I would want my money back , if the builder employed a sparks who was with Napit then the builder is in the clear so then I would want NApit to come take a look and see what the say

Do let us know waht NAPit have to say about this install and whether this is acceptable from one of their vetted installers

Its funny actually , recently I wired a new loft extension + ensuite and got chatting to the LBC inspector on the job and asked him if he ever looks at the wiring install as part of his job and he said Nope , Never, So I could have absolutely lashed in the wires everywhere and even thou the loft extension was inspected the wiring doesn't even get a second consideration by the LBC inspector
