I have a water temp sending kit for my old chevy. However, I don't want to use the plastic warning light it came with. I want to use my own chrome warning light because it fits the look of my dash better (51 Chevy Wagon). The kit plastic light has two prongs and is self-grounded. One prong is for ignition switch (or dash lights). The other is for prong is for the engine sending unit.
The chrome warning light I prefer to use just has a power wire and a ground wire. So....

1) Is it possible to just simply hook up my light instead of the kit light? Seems doubtful.
2) If not, can I hook up the temperature sending kit like it's supposed to be, hide that cheap plastic warning light up under that dash, and wire (tie in) my preferred dash light to one of the prongs of the plastic dash light (maybe just the ignition prong)? If that were to work, then both lights would come on but I would only see my chrome dash light since the plastic light would be hidden. Could the solution be that simple or is there no solution for tying in my preferred dash light?

i would think that on your preferred light, blak is ground and red is + from the sender. CAN'T SEE ANY NEED FOR A FEED FROM DASH LIGHTS OR IGNITION.

Without seeing the wiring diagram this is only a guess;
The sending unit probably grounds the circuit at a certain temperature. Therefore if you connect your red to ignition feed and black to sending unit your light should work.
The lights do not "self ground".

Post your wiring diagram/instructions for confirmation.
