Discuss Cooker Connected to Ring in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I have an electrician undertaking the wiring changes required for the installation of a new kitchen. An issue has arisen because he insists on connecting my double oven (max load 5.9kW) to one of the rings - the house has two rings (each 32amp MCB). For the last 20 years a nearly identical double oven and hob (max load 6.6kW) have been connected to a dedicated radial circuit (32amp MCB) - the cable seems to be 6mm. The MCB has never tripped over the years.
I should appreciate a quick opinion as the work is ongoing.
Thanks

An oven or other appliance of that size should not be connected to a ring. It requires its own dedicated supply

Are you certain that the “electrician “ is qualified and registered for domestic electrical work?

As @James has said. That oven most definitely should not be on a ring.

If you need some proof for the electrician then you can quote the following... Appendix 15 BS7671 - See page 505 of the most recent BS7671 note (iii), it states:

connecting cookers, ovens and hobs with a rated power exceeding 2kW should be on their own dedicated radial circuit.

while the oven might happily work on the ring, it's poor practice. a dedicated 32A circuit is a better option not just for now, but in case in future you want to fit a more powerful appliance. as you already have a dedicated cooker circuit, could he not alter/extend this to siut?

Any update on this, @Traveller? What did your electrician say yesterday?

Thanks for all the comments. Sorry I've been up to my neck in plasterers today - if you know what I mean! Yes, I saw the electrician today and we went in detail through the diversity calculations etc and he now agrees that the existing (moved) radial circuit can be used. Problem solved.
Thankyou to all who commented as your support helped quite a bit I think.
