Discuss Cost of 200m Wavcon 95 underground? DNO needed? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Smallholder

Hi,

We are planning to put a small house on our smallholding.

We will need a power feed from the transformer/pole on our land next to the road.

It has been suggested that 'Wavcon 95' cable might be used ... whatever that is!

If we put a distribution box & meters next to the transformer, will the electricity supplier still need to install the subsequent 200m of underground cable? Or can we hire a contractor to do it?

Also, has anyone a rough idea of the cost of 200m of this grade of underground cable?

Many thanks!

Richard

Your first call should be to your supplier to discuss the feasibility and whether they wil run the supply to the location of the new home......and the costs to do this.

I'm not sure I'd want my supplier fuse 200m away.

Thanks for the prompt reply Murdoch.

The last time I spoke to them they wanted me to fill out a huge form before even talking to me ..

Eek ... could they actually say NO!

>> and the costs to do this.
At this stage I'm looking for a ballpark figure : are we talking a few £1000 ... or several TENS of £1000?

That very much depends on what you can agree on with your DNO!! You could for example offer to provide all the trenching and back-fill for this cable. But it will need to conform with your DNO's requirements, which will include the provision of soft sand bedding and cable cover, along with cable protection tiles and a buried warning tape.

The DNO will also have to evaluate if the transformer and the supply to it are adequate to take the extra load. You will, I am afraid, have to fill in the long form, you could try asking them for help completing it..
