Hi
Very new to electrics and I am in the process of training, and buying tools. Is a voltage tester with proving unit a Part-P requirement or can you just use a non contact voltage stick?

I always carry a fluke voltstick b ut these shouldn't be used by the inexperienced, eg they can't detect voltage through SWA due to the armour removing the emf inductiion. For a GS38 compliant teaster I use the Fluke T5, a doddle to use and has a tong tester built in. Not cheap but comes with built in Fluke kudos and top build quality

i agree with lenny false sence of security with a volt stick i do use them but always use my prods after Fluke T5 pretty good ,and dont even think of the screw driver tester, saw one sticking out of a local sparks pocket at the wholesalers .. things should be banned !!

Quite agree about the use of voltsticks or misuse. They are voltage indicators not provers/testers and can only give clues not proof.

fluke t5 for me, as for testing with a volt stick. well i would use it to prove live but NEVER dead.

Fluke T100, great bit of kit. Volt sticks are good, but definitely not to be used for dead testing, or you may end up dead. I limit the use of mine to check things like pendants when there are no lamps fitted etc just to confirm things like functional switching, anything more involved and its out with the multimeter.

Cheers...........Howard
