Hi,

Please see the existing dimmer switch wiring with the Live & Neutral wires.

In the new dimmer switch, I've tried the Neutral in N only.

I've then tried the Live wire (brown) in the L & L1. In L the light remains on all the time despite switching. In L1 the light remains off despite switching.

Please help.

I think this is why people are reluctant to give too much advice on forums etc. because of the lack of knowledge of DIYers. I've lost count of the numbers of times where i have been to people who have attempted to change a switch or light fitting and said ' well i put all the blacks together and all the reds together and it went bang!'.

As Westward10 said that blue wire will be the switch wire(admittedly it should be sleeved with some brown sleeving) and so with the wires you have there you wont get that smart switch to work.
As always if you are really not sure the advice would be to get someone in to see what could possibly be done.
I apologise if this is not helpful advice but i have seen too many dangerous situations arise from not being sure about these things, electricity hurts.
