Just wondering as i see a lot of people say there's a lack of industrial electric knowledge.

If they don't, what is the follow on qualification after the NVQ3+AM2 that can get you into industrial sparkying, or would it be just a work-based thing with the same theory but bigger cabling etc?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply telectrix.

I know about the gold card etc but what i mean is, is industrial work different from standard domestic and commercial work (ie does it require separate training), do you learn about it on the C&G qualifications or is it just a different application of what you already know once you're qualified?

It depends on the type of industrial work you are lookingto do.
The C&G course covers the background knowledge for electrical installation work, it isn't specific to any sector and the practical experience of an apprenticeship is what teaches that side of things.

Every sector has its areas that need specialist knowledge above and beyond what the basic courses teach you.

Industrial work you often fall into if the company you do your apprenticeship or training with actually does, same with any other electrical sector. If they specialise in agricultural work it would be natural that during your training you become more versed in that area.

Ok so anyone with the full ticket C&G+NVQ+AM2 is legally qualified to work on anything your average electrician will come across, basically?

It all boils down to competence and experience as qualifications often do not give you these virtues. I have the necessary qualifications along with competence and experience in many fields but we all come across a field where you don't have enough.

I learnt on the job, I was there to help out with the metallic containment construction through an agency, having already had a lot of metallic conduit, ladder, trunking and tray experience in the commercial and very high end residential sectors. I then was able to get more involved by asking lots of questions and looking at control panel and piping and instrumentation drawings etc and was shown the basic requirements for termination, ex glands, galvanic corrosion and such. I am still learning and will be until I retire I assume.
