Hi,

Just looking to find out what sort of qualifications would be a good idea to take or do, just looking to do some domestic work.

Ive just come out of my time doing a multi skilled maintenance engineering apprenticeship, I will list some of my qualifications and experiences.

Year 1:

Level 2 NVQ Performing manufacturing operations
Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Engineering (hand skills, basic maths and electricity)

Year 2:

Level 2 NVQ Performing engineering operations
Level 3 VRQ Diploma in engineering & technology

Electrical installation, circuit and engineering, electrical wiring, electronics, computer controlled systems, PLC..... lots of mechanical units etc..

Year 3:

Level 3 NVQ Engineering maintenance

Practical jobs assesed by assesors, sections include electrical, PLC, mechanical, fault finding etc.

Carried out electrical installs, both in college and in my last year.

I want to take the 17th ED wiring regs, aswell as a relevant level 3 installations but part time, whats a good course, as I would like to do some domestic work...

Do I need Part P, and I keep hearing about JIB who give you a grading, do I need both of these..

I hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

The 17th edition is your first stop before any other course. Although it is not a must, it is deemed as the one that is deemed to prove competence.

Part P is a building regulation, you can't get a qualification in a building reg, so dont waste your money on some so called course. There are training providers that will offer this sort of thing, but you will not get any formal qualification. If you work to the Regs, then you also comply with Part P, Electricity At Work Regs, and all the rest of the Statutory documents, and legislation, as they all say that compliance with BS7671 is likely to fullfill the requirements of all that crap.

If you want Part P specific, then buy The Electricians Guide to the building regs. After that you need to get a bit of experience, you will only do that by practice. You have completed your training, and Domestic wiring is no different in principle to any other wiring, the installation methods are different to Ind and Comm work, and usually T&E cable is used instead of singles etc, but it is all in the BGB and the OSG, so now you have your apprenticeship behind you, do the 17th, and get on with it.

Cheers.......Howard
