Hello all,

I've recently built a outhouse, and when I wired it I drilled through the roof joists, as going round the perimeter is a pain. It is in no way going to affect the structure as the roof joists are 6 by 2 and are far over specced for what they are doing or will ever do. I was hoping to use this as my assessment but I'm not sure if this contravenes building regs part a? If not i will use another job but because this is at my home it would just make life easier.

Thanks for your replies.

Tom

if you have drilled between 0.25 and 0.4 of the span, and are> 50mm from the top/bottom, can't see a problem.

Depends what you actually drilled through. If you have drilled through the horizontal ceiling joists above the rooms below, then as long as you have followed the guidance in the building regs book (which I'm assuming you have), then you'll be fine. If you've drilled through the actual roofing trusses (diagonal bits), then you're in trouble, as this isn't allowed.

I've done that myself when i rewired a friends Victorian house, those roof ceiling joists were bloody enormous things. No way a couple of 3/4'' - 1'' holes were ever going to affect them things. But then houses were built solid in those days, and don't compare in the slightest, to the paper thin timbers used in todays properties!!
