Discuss Earth rod or not ? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Just done a periodic on a farm cottage with TT.

Installed a MET as there was just an odd brass clamp before. The main earth is a black cable approx 6mm
I can't find where or to what it is connected, however the Ze reading is 3.56 ohm.
My question is this; do I put a new earth rod in (the best reading I have ever achieved is 17.3 ohm) or do I leave it as is ? as 3.56 is very low. I changed the 100mA rcd for a new 30mA feeding a nasty Wylex fuse board, but circuits all tested out ok.
Any thoughts ?

Hi.

If it were me and I couldn't confirm the presence of an electrode Then I would definately be installing a new one.

3.56 does seem a bit too low for a rod, it could be lashed onto anything.

New rod should ideally be put in as you need to be able to verify it and its connections.

30mA RCD no good on the whole CU as you have no circuit separation if a fault occurs. It will take out the whole house.
