Electrical Certificate

Hi guys looking for some advice. I recently had an extension added and new lighting was added. Building control have asked for an electrical certificate. The electrician is providing one for the changes to the lighting but not for the power as no changes were made to this. I was wondering if anyone knows if this would be acceptable as I don’t want to have it rejected. Many thanks.

A certificate can only be issued for work actually done, are you saying there are no new sockets at all in your extension or did you install some yourself ?

No there are no new sockets added only central lights to downlights. I just wasn’t sure if building control would ask for something for sockets as didn’t really want to have to pay for someone to come and test them all etc if nothing changed. It it just an extension to a living room to add space for a dining table so no sockets were required as everything needed power tv etc are in the original room.

You are only likely going to need a Minor Works Certificate for the lighting alteration.

Spot on, but to keep them happy [and comply with BS7671] a minor works certificate should be available for the alterations to the lighting circuit.

It’s not uncommon for building control to ask for an electrical certificate and notification even on small works

I have had this on several occasions even when no new circuits were added

Agree with above. BC are doing their job and ensuring Part P has been complied with, by complying with BS7671 (with regard to the whole works carried out in the extension). They are just doing their job, by poking their noses in.

agree it's not unreasonable for him to request a cert., but if it's not notifiable, then that's all.

Had to lecture a few building control people in my time, some of them are not competent. Recently I had one lady recent graduate/trainee ringing me asking why my EIC for a commercial job wasnt on NICEIC paper.

They really haven’t

You could build a small extension with absolutely no alterations to the fixed wiring and I bet my lunch money the would still ask for an electrical cert notification

If it only requires a minor works as per the regs, then I wouldn't be submitting an EIC. Some of the staff in BC are clueless.

Building control didn't want part P, they still don't really want it, they don't know enough about electrical work and don't receive the training in it.
So now they have to try and deal with it, they've had guidance which says they must receive notification and/or certificates and so that's what they ask for.

They probably can't tell whether the work done is notifiable or not, it's not always obvious what has or hasn't been done to an electrical installation.
