Hi there...Im new in the electrical system design for automation system .
I encounter a few problem as below

1.Do we need to consider about cable size as the voltage required for this electrical design system is about 230Vac.(what about if the power supply is 3 phase 415Vac)

2. What exactly mean in the name plate of single phase motor(vacuum pump) that stated "nominal power ".Is that mean the rate power supply , power input or power output ?

3. lastly , may i know that , is there any supportive website or reference book that might help in my career(espcially in electrical system design , wiring , part selection ,programming for PLC ) ? if so , please give any suggestion ?

I really desperate to learn more in this field ...pls help me...

Hi homeboyworkshop,

Have some experience of building control systems but others here will have more, but I will try and help where I can.

If you are working with any low voltage in a control panel, the cable size used should be capable of carrying the full load current of the circuit and also be protected with a suitable device (mcb/fuse/overload). If you do not have a copy of the regs, which details cable capacities, the information can be found in cable manufacturers catalogues or on their websites.

Nominal power is normally used to indicate the power used during the normal running mode of the motor. When designing a control system both this and "peak" load (load pulled on start up) have to be taken into account.

As far as selection of parts if you get hold of the full ABB automation control catalogue this will give you the full spec of suitable products they produce, you can use this to source suitable equivalent products from alternative suppliers. Mitsubishi used to do a very good book on plcs and Siemens used to do a first class book on electrical components, selection and useage.

Hopefully others will fill in the gaps or correct any errors I have made, but I hope this helps.

Hi Tony and Wayne :

Firstly , i would like to say thanks a lot for all yours information and suggestion .Its really helpful in my daily job task .
Recently , i have discover a few problem like the vacuum pump motor is running at the current rate of 4.5 A . I found that motor plate there indicated 4.2 for current rate .While , the 4.5 A measurement is take from output cable of Thermal Magnetic Motor Circuit Breaker . This Thermal Magnetic motor Circuit Breaker is set to 5 A . Thus , as yours experience , the current rate of 4.5A is stable for particular motor performance or not ? Thnanks a lot .

it seems acceptable. it will raise the more of a vaccuum you trying to pull

As for learning, it is diffcult to put it all into one 'area'

The ideal course for you would be a national certificate, then onto a HNC/HND Mechatronics

you will get a good knowledge of machine and motor control systems, PLC's, robotics etc etc. Not easy, but neither is the subject matter!

Hi friends,
