Hi, looking into my future within the electrical sector within England and looks very limited. Ive got all my qualification for England to be an electrician and also have my 2391 testing too. Just wanting more details about going and working within Australia. Need more advice on the process and are there more jobs available in Australia, i know that AUS offer a better way of life so would like to move if the process of changing my Qualification over?

If there are any electricain that have done this and moved or even looked into the process please could you give me your option on this and any advice you may have.

Im, a 22 year old guy with no ties to England so can move.

Thanks Dave

Hi, thanks for the advice, ive spent 7 months within AUS and yh very expensive but hopefully the wage is more.

Australia House should be able to help. also we have an aussie member, maddison, who might advise you.

Read all the previous threads on this subject. From what i can gather it is not just a case of having your UK qualifications authenticated and accepted. You will still need to sit a license examination that will give you only limited permit to conduct electrical installations. You need to work under supervision for a year or two to obtain a Full ''A'' Licence. The whole process is i believe Very Expensive''...

It's a Bloody Shame a similar process isn't in place in the UK, it'll be an end to the Fast Track wannabes at a stroke and tighten up no end, the influx of Asian and Eastern European electricians to ply their trade so easily in the UK...

You can blame the EU for that.

I was chatting to a taxi driver in Dublin a couple of years ago - Irish people who want to gain a licence in Dublin have quite stringent rules to adhere to .... whilst those coming to Dublin to "work" have a far more relaxed set of criteria to follow.

Go figure.

I am under the impression that each province in austrailia has it's own electrical licence, so youcan't travel around the whole country

You may well be right, although i think it's mostly just a case of applying for a license to work in another province, i don't think it's a case of sitting another licence exam. ...Though i may well be wrong!! lol!!

NO Not really, you would still have to jump through the hoops as such in other European countries such as France, Germany, Holland, and the majority of the others to gain the paperwork that entitles you to legally work as a professional tradesman in those countries.

The UK however, has shot itself in both feet by allowing these parasite Scam Providers an easy back door access into the domestic side of our industry, by requiring less than minimal qualifications and experience for registration....

Ok. As an ex pat (no not PAT) I will give you some info on what is required to work here in Oz as a spark.
You will need to get your quals verified at Australia house first. Then you can apply for a visa, sit your English language test. If you get your visa on points then you can come over here but still not work as a sparks. You will need to gain employment in the trade to be verified, this takes two years on apprentice pay. Alternative is seek employment through the 457 visa process and get over here at your expense by using one of the many recruitment companies specialising in this process. When you are employed you still have to sit the relevant state licence in which you wish to work. So you need to attend college (TAFE) to sit this intensive course. Electrical Trainee need not apply as you will be blown out the water. Imagine doing the last two years of college in two weeks!!!! As an outsider you're expected to get 90% pass rate minimum, so if you only just scraped through in UK you are really going to struggle. Some states accept licences from other states but not all. QLD licence and SA are transferable, NT will only recognise theirs and WA. WA will only recognise theirs. To give you an idea in current value it will probably cost you in the region of 15'000 of your pounds. It's made hard so we can filter out the Electrical Trainee types and the not really qualified. An alternative is come over on a working holiday visa for a year and see if anyone is prepared to sponsor you, but this route is very difficult as you can only work for one employer for six months max and it has to be rural. Hope this helps.

WOW, Aus sparkies must be awesome, the best in the world! I doubt any UK sparkie could do that ......

Totally misquoted.
Obviously the concept is to hard for you to understand! So I will put it into simpler format and write a bit slower.
Two weeks of intense examination on the theoretical side culminating in the equivalent of a year 4 UK apprentice. This is for the foreigners who wish to qualify as a spark, the Aussies do it in 4 years just like UK used to. Then there is the practical test to be completed in 2 days very similiar to the UK. All to show that you are already a qualified sparks and not a Electrical Trainee or someone with false quals. Does that clear up any misunderstanding?

Over exaggerated. I'm a UK J.I.B sparks who has obtained the full A class electrical license and the only difficult part of the process was the 6 month Gap training... Not 2 years! The Gap training is obtained by completing a logbook for jobs completed over a duration period. UK sparks are sought after in Australia our work ethic is totally different from the Aussies. For anyone doing the move all I can say is that the money and perks is ten times better then the UK. Australia is like the UK was 30 years ago. Unions are strong and the industry is like a boys club. It's not what you know but who..
