We have a new build house which has a detached garage which we are looking to get electricity too-ideally we don't want to have to dig up the Tarmac on the drive to the property.

is it acceptable to run armoured cable above ground?

If the garage was built at the same time as the house I'd be surprised if there is not a service duct from house to garage. In answer to your question armoured cable can be run above ground.

Unfortunately there isn't any ducting to the garage(the builders hadn't put any in)

we were just thinking of running the cable along a wall and then down onto a set of block pavers on the ground.

Not a good idea, your best bet would be to get a reputable qualified, experienced Electrician to do this work on your behalf.

That's what I thought, but no surely not, hence my advice to get a decent spark in to do the work

How can a new build house have a detached garage without any power to it???

I will be getting a professional in to do the work-I'm just enquiring as to what is possible.

It's not possible to comment on the logistics or routing of the cable without seeing the actual job. Steel wire armoured cable would be the best cable and it can be chased in or buried in a trench or run on the surface but the routing and method needs to take into account environmental factors that might cause damage.

If you consult with an electrician you should be able to get him to specify the cable and the route then maybe, if there's substantial installation work involved, negotiate that you do the installation work to his spec and he connects up, tests and signs off the work. That way the job's done safely and you save a bit of cash on the labour side of things.
