Welcome to the forum, there are many ways of setting up emergency lighting, in order to be installing these then compliance with BS5266 is a key feature, among various others.
This is the basic idea of connection, a main lighting circuit that on failure of the lighting circuit will light the emergency lighting and also have a test switch to perform the regular maintenance tests, generally without disturbance to the normal lighting.
