A couple of questions that have bothered me since 17th came in which I would appreciate comment on.

Firstly if I replace a battenholder in a bathroom with an enclosed light fitting and and cross bond to nearest water pipe do I need to ensure that the lighting circuit is RCD protected.
Also if I install an low voltage fan with transformer and isolation outside bathroom but off the lighting circuit do I need to provide an RCD.

Many thanks

is the pipe already bonded then? does the light fitting have an earth already? in that case you dont need to "cross bond", or supplementary bond the pipe. if the pipe has no bonding, then either your main switch needs to be an RCD or you need to install some main and supplementary (see your regs).

That used to be a simple no, but now pretty much every circuit (with a FEW exceptions) should be RCD, I go off the premise that if I'm not sure, bang one in.

Sorry I cant be more definitive.

If the fan isolator/transformerr are surface mounted external to the special location, the low voltage fan mounted in the special location No supp bonding or rcd required
The enclosed light replacing the baton holder it is replacement work only if it is still a class 2 fitting, again no req to rcd the lights

Isn't it the case that - apart from maintenance such as replacing the light fitting - you shouldn't alter or extend a circuit unless it is 17th Ed compliant? ....

i.e., RCD protection a definite requirement for all circuits passing through a room containing bath or shower, and supp bonding the not required if the three conditions met (extraneous part continuity to MET confirmed, 30mA protection, and disconnection times met).

Or am I missing the point here? (Quite likely!)
