EV Charger Pricing

Hi guys,

Not long on the OLEV register.

Just wondering how you guys price your work.

Do you just quote by taking in to account and passing the £500 grant on to the customer?

Is this, then the same invoice you submit to OLEV?

Do you itemise the grant separately for the customer?

Just curious so that I don’t trip myself up...

Any tips greatly appreciated.

The grant is now £350 so check any quotes you sent out.
You will be competing with the leaflets saying install from --- etc
The criteria for this is quite restrictive. 10m cable run, spare way in the fuse board, etc etc.. In my experience very few fit this criteria so customer would pay more anyway. The ads are a way of finding the customer then the marking up and up selling starts for these firms.
I personally look at cable required and other materials, earth rod needed depending on setup or type of charger then any bits to put a new circuit in the board or is a small new board needed?
Then look at how long it will take and x by hourly rate.
9 times out of 10 my calculations come out close to what the likes of rolec advertise on the website. On the occasion I am more expensive customers usually prefer a local installer who comes to do a quote/survey vs a remote faceless company. Hence they will pay more. This usually being a very long cable run and a lot of other work needed to install in.
In part I think I get a lot of these because I get very good prices on materials locally and have done so many now that I got my ways of speeding it up and working quickly but safely.
The key is charge for your time
Charge for materials plus a % on top for hidden extras
Speak to your wholesaler or supplier for example some premium brands sell to approved installers with a 10 or 20% discount which you immediately benefit from making you a £100+ straightaway. So charge list price. Others have little margin such as rolec. That said I pay £35 less than another local spark in the region from a large supplier as I buy a lot of them over a year. I have bought 12 already since Jan 1st

For Olev you include the full amounts on the form and it includes sections for cost to customer, grant amount etc.. Olev will pay you the 350.00 and yu invoice customer for full amount minus the 350.00
Download the OLEV claim form, its at the back of the information for installers pdf on the OLEV website. It's simple.

That’s a very comprehensive reply, exactly what I was after.
I hadn’t realised the grant had reduced or there was a 10m cable run restriction...

I need to revisit the details in the homecharge scheme before I send my first quote out this week.

Just price the job as you would do normally then deduct the grant as it goes to you not the customer.

You will find a lot of ev charger companies have very restrictive criteria for the 'normal' install. as shown in this pdf from rolec. Advantage Rolec have with selling the install package is they dont have to factor in the middle men and pricing from suppliers, they can pocket the saving themselves.
if the charger is 10m from consumer unit and in the garage its cheap. if you want it outside or need an earth rod then the price will quickly go up. very few installs fall into the standard install bracket.
Only saving grace is they do provide a type A rcbo so as long as you have space for an mcb then you can install it into the board - assuming its not a death trap and is otherwise compliant.

I’m not on ROLECs list although my course was sponsored by them, I didn’t fancy forking out £500 for their testing kit when I don’t know how many installs I would be getting.

I am on myenergi with the British made Zappi etc which don’t require an earth rod which helps cut down installation time considerably.

Gavin, is that 10m run a ROLEC specification? If not then Ive completely missed it.

Hi Phill - no it’s just the max cable run included in their “fixed” price menu, along with several other conditions.

As wilko said its just there standard install for there chargers when installed by the chosen installers.
The chargecheck can be used with other chargers aswell but its quite limited. much better to get one of the specialist bits that connect to your mft. if you message me I will send over some useful bits of info, couldnt message you direct due to your settings.
