hi just a couple of questions really, i am looking to put a socket on the wall for my tv and need to extend the ring circuit but is it ok to use new cable for a couple of legs of the ring circuit with the rest of the circuit being old existing cable or does the whole circuit need to be replaced with new cable? and basically this socket is going above a new electric fireplace is this ok? if not can someone tell me what the regs are on how far away it has to be from a fireplace.

and im putting downlighters in and would it be ok to use the old cable for the light thats already there at the first point and just loop to all the other downlighters with new cable?

thanks for your replies

it's ok to use old and new cables, idealy you would put a label indicating old and new wirring at cu.are you thinking of adding a spur or extending the ring?
you need to check existing supply can handle the extra load,if voltage drop will be a factor etc-

i have to ask this....are you `competent` to carry out this work?....

see if you were....then you would know about the "2 different versions" sticker at origin...

You can "mix" colours that are identifiable as line and neutral as in the old colours and the harmonised ones. You sleeve those that are not such as 3 core SWA with brown, grey and black for example. Sticker must be fitted at CU though as others have said when old and harmonised colours are used in the installation.

Why if thats where they want it? If the external influences do not effect the TV then it is fine IMO

I was thinking of the heat from a 3kW fire derating the plug/socket/circuit to 2kW! Plus, the picture it conjured up in my mind of a something else plugged in with flex/cable hanging down in front of the fire. (with clothes hanging on it to dry)!
