Hi! I am self-installing some 8' LED rope-like lighting in my basement on the ceiling. I have 3 of these 8' lights, which will be joined by 2 12" connecting cords. There is an option to wire these connected lights into the main lighting, but I don't want these to come on every time I turn on the room lights. The lights came with a 60" electrical cord (with an on/off switch in the middle of the cord) that plugs into a wall outlet so that I can turn the lights on/off as I want, regardless if the main lights are on or not. I have a wall outlet that is half way up the wall, but the 60" isn't long enough to reach from the lights to the outlet. Simple question here: is it okay to use an indoor extension cord?

In general extension cords are not the best solution for permanently wiring something in, though can be safe if they are routed and supported safely - and overload should not be an issue with LED lighting.

@Megawatt is our resident expert on US things electrical, so hopefully he'll be able to advise on the size/length of cord that might be OK to use.

Since you are talking about rope lighting inside which is diodes and not bulbs I would say no problem, just use a better drop cord and not the cheap 16 gage wire
