Hi all,

Very new to electrics so please bare with me...

Just moved into a new property. Extractor fan (manrose x100h) in bathroom not working. Took of face plate to find circuit was not connected. Connected wires to correct connections (see picture). Now the fan is running but independent of the light being switched on / off. The fan continues to run non stop.

As there are two red wires coming from the ceiling rose i can not tell which is the switched live and which is the permanent live.

Could it be that the permanent live and switched live are connected to the wrong connectors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There will be a permanent live, switched live and neutral, if you do not have test equipment it is near impossible to tell which is which, especially if they have been disconnected at the ceiling rose. This is an hours work for an electrician, get one in would be my advice. Ask for a local recommendation on facebook.

Yes that could be the problem

The wires going into the control section of the fan appear disconnected.
This might mean that someone previously disconnected them due to a fault.

Also the “h” part of the model number may indicate the fan has a humidity sensor. This could also be faulty.

I suggest replacing the fan. As above, get an electrician to connect it up for you.
It’s a “pop in on the way home” job

The fan looks way past its sell by date. It has not been kept clean. Suggesting it is going to fail very soon if it has not already.

There is something very dodgy about that wiring, two red conductors and no earth suggests that the earth may be being used as a live. This is an unacceptable situation and I strongly recommend that you get an electrician to investigate.

Also as mentioned above that fan is filthy, it needs to be cleaned before being put back in to service to remove the fire hazard this creates.

Thanks for the reply.

There is an earth within the same cable as the red and black conductors, it just hasn’t been threaded through into the unit.

The fan was caked in dirt, I cleaned it thorough before putting it back in.

I think a new fan may be the best solution here

Thanks all for the replies - will be buying a replacement unit and getting it installed.

I think it's just live, neutral and switch live to be fair. Fan is filthy and needs changing though and won't take long to test which live is which for anyone who knows what they are doing.
