So the boss asked me this morning if I wanted to accompany him to a fibre job, fault finding and splicing etc to see if I fancied learning that and I actually found there wasn't that much too it... Just wondered if anyone else does this and thinks it'd be worthwhile me trying to train in as well as being an electrician?

It's always worth adding a new string to your bow,but only if there's work for it,fibre isn't as hard as it was once, time was when you had to cut it and polish the ends by hand, now you can get a machine that cuts, polishes and applies the termination.

We actually cut, stripped it and cleaned it by hand today and the machine done the rest but it was really quite interesting to see what was involved in it... Our company seems to get a lot of fibre work so I can't see it being a bad thing?

I guess the way the world is going with fibre everywhere it's not a bad idea, if it doesn't cost you even better.

i looked at it a few years ago but didn't in the end as I felt it would be a waste of money as if have no customers to splice their fibre.

I think he's quite keen to get me doing it first to build some experience on it before doing the course for it.. he's got a few other guys doing/completed the course so I think it's quite a decent shout.. just wanted some other opinions on it..

Personally I take every opportunity to learn a new skill which presents itself, you never know when you might need that skill!

I have learned some utterly random skills in my time, but have used most of them at some point in time.

i have as well, i can mix cement, bonding, plaster etc, dry lining is easy, done a little roofing (putting trusses up, right laugh just the three of us getting it on roof with no pulleys)

the range of things we do on a daily basis beggers belief.

Me Irish pal,Pat has done the fibre job for twenty years, all over the EU,he reckons the most important thing is good eyesight,i asked him how big a piece i would need to use as tails...he went all Mrs.Brown on me...:icon12:

Just did a splice myself!! Only an 8pair.
I don't have the qualification, but from what the other guys did in the company it's only a matter of days. But it might be different for different splicing techniques/testing.
I'd go for it, fibre is only going to be on the up in the future with more impatient people needing ridiculously fast broadband everywhere!
