Hi Delta, although I am unaware of regulations and practices in the US I will assume the practices in testing and diagnostics are similar, having said that, may I enquire to why you are asking?

We in the UK may take this terminology different as to yourselves, a fire alarm loop would suggest you are discussing an addressable system, clear guidance and limitations of readings are usually given by the manufacturer of the system itself, dead tests are only ever normally done prior to energising the system for the first time or trying to identify a fault, otherwise the panel itself monitors the loop constantly in normal operation.

If you mean Earth Loop Impedance then treat it as any other circuit and loop test at the power point for the panel, usually a key switch isolator.

Delta I’m not guite understanding what you mean other than to see if they work and are wired correctly. When I have an inspector come out for a final inspection he has with him a can of smoke that he picks a couple of smoke alarms and blows smoke in them to test them. I don’t know where they get the can. When 1 goes off the rest should go off to.
