Hi guys (girls) could anyone tell me what the legal requirements are for installing an L2 fire alarm system in a HMO dwelling ie who can do the work and who certifies and commissions the installation.
Also, same question for emergency lighting.
Could someone reply to this ASAP please.
Thanks

The FIA (Fire Industry Association) are the only organisation who can third party accredit Fire Alarm Companies (Chief Fire Officers association are requiring this now - CFOA- The Chief Fire Officers Association download the item under "false alarms etc") - they have courses (& therefore accreditations) in Design, Installation, Commissioning, Service and Maint etc. Really anyone who is involved with any installation should have these qualifications.

If you check BS5839 you will see that there is a certificate (similar to the IET install cert) which requires a signature for each of the main components - as I understand it, knowledgeable customers/insurance companies will require these to be signed by FIA registered companies (whose personnel have the various qualifications).

Emergency lighting only requires electrical contractors with sufficient knowledge of BS5266 such that compliance is achieved.

Hope this helps.

FIA details here - Book a Course or an Exam

NB - these are one day courses & so, not rocket science if you understand fire alarms.
